The International Adoption Process:
Your Step-by-Step Guide
Your Step-by-Step Guide
Adopting a child from another country involves clear, regulated steps to protect everyone involved. Our team will be your advocate and guide throughout the entire process.
1.
Get Started and Choose a Country
We encourage you to register for a free information session and submit our pre-application form. An adoption specialist will review your information and help you identify the countries you are eligible to adopt from.
2.
Home Study and U.S. Government Approval
You will complete an international home study and submit an application to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This is a crucial step to get official approval to bring an adopted child into the United States.
3.
The Matching Process (Receiving a Referral)
Once your paperwork (dossier) is sent to the country of your choice, you will be in the waiting process. When a child is identified for your family, you will receive a “referral” with their social and medical history. Our team will help you review the file and make an informed decision. Or, if you are pursuing a waiting child, the country program will issue your formal referral upon review and approval of your Dossier.
4.
travel and finalization
After accepting a referral and receiving appropriate USCIS approvals, you will travel to your child’s country of origin to meet them and complete the legal custodyprocess. This is a life-changing trip where you will become a family. Gladney’s in-country partners and travel experts will assist you every step of the way.
